What is a typical lease security deposit?
October 11th, 2009 Posted by: admin
I’m digging through my paperwork trying to find the orignial lease (three addresses in the time we’ve been on this same lease!), but anyone have any idea what a typical security deposit on a lease is.
Our lease was 4 yr, 60k miles, Honda Odyssey. I seem to remember putting down upwards of $4k when we got it.

I would’ve guessed that the security deposit was around $250 or $300.

You can negotiate a better lease term and price, if you negotiate on the full value of the car. So instead of leaseing 50K you can negoitate the price of the car to 41k. And that results in a cheaper lease payment. Go to and read the article about buying a new car, this will explain more.

Typically, your Security Deposit was equal to the monthly lease payment, rounded up to the next $50. If your lease payment was $433, the deposit would of been $450. If your lease payment was $465, your deposit would of been $500. Call the customer service line on your monthly bill, they have access to the screens which list your security deposit. It’s possible, if you had good credit, your deposit was waived (zero)

Typically you can take your monthly payment and round it up to the next $50 increment. Depending on your credit the deposit could have been twice that or there have been none. I would recommend calling the leasing company (should be Honda) or if its someone else and you don’t remember who it is call the selling dealer. Their records will be able to tell you who the leasing company was and what kind of security deposit was required.

A normal security deposit is only 1st payment unless you had credit problems and they asked you for more. the rest of the money was used as Cap Cost Reduction to lower your payments. You can always call the bank or leasing company and they will tell you what the deposit is.
